A Tribute to Paige Hicks

July 20th was a sad day for every Bike & Builder. Paige Hicks, leader of P2S '10 and alumni from '09 had been struck by a truck and was killed. She was only 21. My best friend Gabe was her co-leader. He had called me with the horrifing news later that day. I hope I never have to hear him like that again. Its been heart breaking for all of us but the response from the Bike & Build community has been tremendous. As a tribute to Paige, all of the trips and many alumni have been chalking messages in her honor.

E E Cummings is one of my favorite poets and these words have been in my head since that tragic day. Kelsey and I got it down on the pavement of a bike path on Sunday on the ride into Sandstone, Mn. It's our small way of honoring Paige.

i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me(i carry it inmy heart)i am never without it(anywhere i go you go,my dear; and whatever is doneby only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

We love and miss you Paige
